Secondary Characteristic Classes of Surface Bundles
The Miller-Morita-Mumford classes associate to an oriented surface bundle E → B a class κi(E) ∈ H 2i(B;Z). In this note we define for each prime p and each integer i ≥ 1 a secondary characteristic class λi(E) ∈ H2i(p−1)−2(B;Z)/Zκi(p−1)−1. The mod p reduction λi(E) ∈ H∗(B;Fp) has zero indeterminacy and satisfies pλi(E) = κi(p−1)−1(E) ∈ H ∗(B;Z/p2).
متن کاملCharacteristic Classes of Surface Bundles Discussed with Professor Farb
We understand a lot about fiber bundle F → E → B, when F is a vector space and the structure group is a linear group. We can compute their cohomology completely. However, if we consider other bundles, such as bundles with fiber F a manifold, where the structure group is the diffeomorphism group, we know nearly nothing at all. In this article, we discuss surface bundles, which is the first step ...
متن کاملCharacteristic classes of complexified bundles
We examine the topological characteristic cohomology classes of complexified vector bundles. In particular, all the classes coming from real vector bundles are computed. We use characteristic classes with the axioms of Milnor and Stasheff [6]. Introduction Definition (Real generator bundles). We consider a real vector bundle F → B and a complex vector bundle E → B over the same base space B. If...
متن کاملCharacteristic Classes of A{bundles
We consider locally trivial bundles over smooth manifolds, whose fibers are finitely generated projective modules over a convenient algebra A. For such a bundle E → X and a bounded reduced cyclic cocycle c on A we construct a sequence chc (E) of de–Rham cohomology classes on X, which are an analog of the classical Chern character. We show that these classes depend only on the cohomology class o...
متن کاملCharacteristic Classes of Foliated Surface Bundles with Area-preserving Holonomy
Making use of the extended flux homomorphism defined in [13] on the group SympΣg of symplectomorphisms of a closed oriented surface Σg of genus g ≥ 2, we introduce new characteristic classes of foliated surface bundles with symplectic, equivalently area-preserving, total holonomy. These characteristic classes are stable with respect to g and we show that they are highly non-trivial. We also pro...
